Diary of a voyage to California /by Charles R. Callender, 1852-1854.

The volume consists of three parts: diary (59 p.), accounts, and poems. Callender's diary chronicles an 1852 voyage via Panama to California briefly describing each stage of the journey. The diary describes mining at Point Bar on the Stanislaus River with S. B. Collins and the effect of mining on the countryside. Callender comments on the weather, living conditions, holidays, and briefly mentions a stay in San Francisco. The diary continues with Callender's voyage to New York in 1853 and his social life and travels in the Northeast and Canada in 1853-54. The accounts record monthly living and working expenses of Callender and his partners while mining as well as the amount of gold extracted. In the back of the volume are several pages of poems.
